Data: live Play-Asia catalogue snapshot taken 6 November 2026 (88 budget reprint listings found by keyword search, 71 with a price). Prices are Play-Asia’s ringgit prices at the time of the snapshot and will have moved since.
In our price tracking guide we found that Play-Asia list prices almost never drop. So where do the bargains come from? One answer is the Japanese budget reprint.
Japanese publishers often re-release a game a year or more after launch under a cheaper label: Best Price, New Price Version or New Price Edition. Play-Asia lists these next to the original release, so the same game can appear twice at very different prices. We pulled the live catalogue and compared them.
1. What we compared
On 6 November 2026 we searched Play-Asia for budget reprints and found 88 listings across PS4 (39), Switch (34), PS5 (13) and Switch 2 (2). 71 had a price; the rest were out of stock.
For each reprint we looked for the original release of the same game on the same console and in the same region edition, leaving out limited, deluxe and collector’s editions. 18 pairs had both a reprint and an original on sale, covering 10 games.
2. The reprint was usually much cheaper
In 15 of the 18 pairs the reprint was cheaper, and the median saving was 46%. Some examples (prices in ringgit as Play-Asia showed them):
| Game | Console | Original | Reprint | Saving |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Final Fantasy VII Rebirth | PS5 | RM320.57 | RM126.51 (New Price Version) | 61% |
| Hogwarts Legacy | PS5 | RM219.32 | RM118.08 (Best Price) | 46% |
| NBA 2K26 | PS5 | RM215.10 | RM118.08 (Best Price) | 45% |
| NBA 2K26 | Switch 2 | RM206.67 | RM96.98 (Best Price) | 53% |
| Dragon Quest Builders 2 | Switch | RM274.16 | RM151.83 (New Price Version) | 45% |
| Capcom Belt Action Collection | Switch | RM227.76 | RM71.63 (Best Price) | 69% |
| Sniper Elite 5 | PS5 | RM172.92 | RM130.73 (New Price Edition) | 24% |
The three biggest savings (69%, 67% for Sonic Forces on Switch, and 61%) were all on games whose original was listed as “Expected stock arrival”, meaning Play-Asia has to source it. Two of those three reprints were already in Play-Asia’s warehouse.
3. But not always
In 3 of the 18 pairs the original was cheaper:
- NBA 2K25 on PS5 and on PS4: the original was RM92.77, the Best Price reprint RM105.42.
- Sonic Forces on PS4: the original was RM109.64, the New Price Version RM122.30.
Both NBA 2K25 originals were sitting in Play-Asia’s warehouse, which suggests older stock being cleared. One more catch with NBA 2K25: the reprint is labelled Multi-Language and the original listing is not, so check the language line before choosing the cheaper one.
Rule: search for the game’s name and look at every edition, not just the first result.
4. Sometimes the reprint is the only option
For 18 of the 36 priced reprints where we found the original listed, the original had no price at all because it was out of stock or out of print. For those games the budget reprint is the only new copy Play-Asia sells.
5. How long until a reprint appears?
Using Play-Asia’s release dates for each pair:
- NBA 2K25 and NBA 2K26 reprints came about 6 months after the original.
- Danganronpa V3 took about a year, Team Sonic Racing about 17 months, Dragon Quest Builders 2 and Sonic Forces about 2 years, and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth about 27 months.
- Hogwarts Legacy (34 to 43 months) and Capcom Belt Action Collection (about 4 years) took longest.
So a reprint is not something to wait for if you want to play a game this year. It is worth checking for any older game on your list.
6. Language and price ranges
- 32 of the 71 priced reprints were labelled Multi-Language or English. The rest are probably Japanese-only text, so read the listing.
- Median reprint prices: RM128.62 on PS4 (30 listings), RM109.64 on Switch (26) and RM118.08 on PS5 (13). The cheapest PS5 reprint we found was Yakuza: Like a Dragon (New Price Version) at RM54.80.
- All but two of the 71 were Japanese editions; the other two were Asian editions.
How we got these numbers
We queried Play-Asia’s product catalogue on 6 November 2026 with the search terms “best price”, “new price version”, “new price edition” and related variants, kept game listings whose names carry a budget label, and looked up the original of each by title, console and region edition. Play-Asia’s search returns up to 200 results per term, so this is a large sample of the reprints on sale, not a complete list. Prices are Play-Asia’s ringgit prices at the time of the snapshot and change with the exchange rate; shipping is not included.
