Japanese, Asian or Western Editions? What 128 Upcoming PS5 and Switch 2 Imports Tell Us
We tracked 128 PS5 and Switch 2 releases on Play-Asia from October 2026 to April 2027. Japanese editions were usually cheapest, almost all were labelled with English text, and every one was region free.

Data: ROCKSTARmedia Release Radar snapshot generated 25 October 2026 (128 releases, release window 4 October 2026 to 23 April 2027). Prices are Play-Asia’s ringgit prices at the time of the snapshot and will have moved since.
If you import games in Malaysia, the same question comes up every time: which edition should I buy? Play-Asia usually lists a game in several versions, labelled Asia, Japan, US or Europe, and the prices can differ by RM50 or more.
Instead of guessing, we looked at the data. Our Release Radar tracks upcoming and newly released PS5 and Switch 2 games on Play-Asia, and its October 2026 snapshot covers 128 releases: 37 for PS5 and 91 for Switch 2. Here is what it shows.
1. Every game in the snapshot was region free
All 128 releases were listed with no region protection. A Japanese, Asian, US or European copy will boot on a Malaysian PS5 or Switch 2.
Region still matters in two places:
- DLC and online passes are sold through the account’s own store. A Japanese disc with a Malaysian account may not see Japanese DLC.
- Bundled codes (early purchase bonuses, download codes in the box) are usually tied to the region of the edition.
If you plan to buy lots of DLC, the safest pick is the edition whose region matches your account.
2. English is the norm, not the exception
The biggest worry with Japanese editions is language. In our snapshot:
- 54 of 55 Japanese editions and 58 of 59 Asian editions were listed with English or multi-language text.
- On Switch 2, 75 of 91 listings were explicitly labelled with English. The rest were mostly US and European editions, which do not carry a separate language label because English is the default.
The practical rule: read the language line in the product name or description. Play-Asia names editions like “(Multi-Language)” or “(English)” when English is included. If the listing says nothing, check the publisher’s own page before buying.
3. Japanese editions were usually the cheapest
Median prices in the snapshot, by edition:
| Platform | Edition | Listings | Median price | Range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Switch 2 | Japan | 39 | RM148.63 | RM89.16 to RM543.69 |
| Switch 2 | Asia | 38 | RM201.74 | RM114.65 to RM297.31 |
| Switch 2 | US | 7 | RM212.35 | RM186.87 to RM254.83 |
| Switch 2 | Europe | 7 | RM263.33 | RM208.11 to RM335.54 |
| PS5 | Japan | 16 | RM159.25 | RM114.65 to RM280.28 |
| PS5 | Asia | 21 | RM208.11 | RM106.16 to RM297.31 |
An important caveat: these are different games in each group, not the same game sold in four editions. Smaller Japanese releases pull the Japanese median down, and the RM543.69 top of the Japanese Switch 2 range is a limited edition. So the table shows a pattern, not a guarantee. For any single game, compare its own editions.
4. When to pick each edition
- Japanese edition: best value when the listing confirms English. Good for single-player games where DLC and online play matter less.
- Asian edition: the safe default. English is almost always included, the box art is usually English or bilingual, and prices sit in the middle.
- US or European edition: only when there is no Asian or Japanese edition with English, or when you want a Western collector’s edition. These were the most expensive groups in our data.
- Limited and collector’s editions: 30 of the 128 listings were special editions, with a median of RM212.35. They sell out first, so pre-order early if you want one.
5. Timing your purchase
Most of the window is still ahead of us. Of the 128 listings, 105 were “Not yet published or released” at the time of the snapshot, and only 16 were already in Play-Asia’s warehouse. December 2026 is the busiest month with 32 releases, followed by October (27) and January 2027 (21).
If you want a limited edition, pre-order early: stock for these is usually small.
How we got these numbers
The Release Radar is updated every week from Play-Asia’s product catalogue. For this guide we used the snapshot generated on 25 October 2026. We counted listings by platform and edition, took median prices in ringgit, and checked the language and region fields Play-Asia publishes for each product. We did not adjust for shipping, which is the same whichever edition you choose.
