What Update 10 adds

  • Random street events: eight types, including street fights, car accidents, police checkpoints, robberies and street races.
  • Four repeatable challenges: vehicle destruction, hit-and-run, police takedowns and katana combat. Each successful run pays $5,000 to $7,000 in game money and permanently raises maximum health by 500.
  • Vehicle destruction: bumpers, bonnets and boots can now break off in crashes, under gunfire or from melee attacks.
  • Weapon wheel: hold Tab on keyboard, or LB/L1 on a controller, to switch weapons quickly.
  • Banking: you can deposit and withdraw money. Cash you carry is lost when you die, but savings in the bank are kept.
  • Map and fixes: updated map icons, better roads, terrain, traffic routes and pedestrian pathing, plus fixes to chess difficulty, the PS1-style filter, basketball controls, the fire engine's water cannon and collisions.
  • Performance: lower CPU overhead, improved vehicle deformation, optimised animations and lighter particle effects.

What kind of game is Cartoon Crime?

Cartoon Crime is a bright, cartoon-styled take on the open-world crime game. Its main hook is a camera you can switch at any moment between a third-person view and a classic top-down view of the same world, so it can play like a modern sandbox or like the old overhead crime games. Missions are optional. You can drive, fight, recruit bodyguards who follow you around, and run from a police response that grows as your wanted level rises.

Many buildings can be entered, including gun shops, gyms, restaurants and cinemas, and there are side activities such as bowling, billiards, arcade machines and kickboxing bouts for cash. BuBa Games describes itself as a two-person studio and says the game runs on its own C++ and OpenGL engine.

A fast Early Access update pace

Update 10 is the latest in a run of frequent patches since launch. Update 8 (14 October) added a Wild West desert continent with a second airfield, rally cars and drivable tanks. Update 9 (20 October) followed with steam trains, a zombie zone around a nuclear plant and two hidden underground labs. Earlier patches added islands, boats, swimming and a skatepark.

For Malaysian players, the Steam page lists 23 supported interface languages, including English and Indonesian but not Bahasa Malaysia. The game is Windows only, with no Mac, Linux or console versions announced. For co-op, the developer notes that every player needs the latest update.
